The Benefits of Memory Care

The Benefits of Memory Care

What exactly is Memory Care?

Memory care is a specific type of long-term skilled nursing for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other memory problems. It typically falls under the “Assisted Living” umbrella. Memory care units, also called special care units (SCUs), usually provide 24-hour supervised care. This can be a separate wing, floor, or even building of a residential facility.

SCUs are designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s. Memory care SCUs may (or may not!) be locked, specially secured units. Memory care wards have unique designs, so navigation is easy, and residents don’t wander.

State regulations vary regarding services offered in senior care communities. But, memory care typically offers supervised care, medical monitoring, and help with daily activities such as dressing, chores, and bathing. Memory care staff are specially trained to assist people with impaired cognition. Additionally, memory care units often include structured activities and programs specially designed to nurture residents suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Our Memory Care unit allows for our residents to walk freely, as all main entryways are secure. And, our secured courtyard allows those the freedom to pursue their favorite activities outdoors! Residents can continue gardening, bird watching or just taking walks to get a breath of fresh air.

Residents live in a home-like environment and have structured activities facilitated by staff members trained specifically to care for those with memory impairments.
